Introducing the Case Study for Your Activities

Throughout the course, we will be using one case study for your practice activities. The activities you will be doing at the end of every module will be the basis for the module quizzes which you must complete to get your certificate of completion. Project Title: "Healthy Communities Through Improved WASH in Nsanje"

Organization: A local Malawian NGO named "Nsanje WASH Initiative."

Project Goal: To improve the health and well-being of 3,000 households in two flood-prone Traditional Authorities (T.A.s) in Nsanje District by increasing access to safe water, promoting improved sanitation, and fostering sustainable hygiene practices over 3 years.

Key Project Components/Activities:

  1. Borehole Drilling & Rehabilitation: Drill 15 new climate-resilient boreholes equipped with handpumps and rehabilitate 10 existing, non-functional community water points.
  2. Water Point Committee (WPC) Strengthening: Establish and train 25 WPCs (one per water point) on sustainable management, basic maintenance, financial record-keeping, and transparent fee collection for repairs.
  3. Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Facilitation: Implement CLTS approaches in 50 target villages to trigger communities to become Open Defecation Free (ODF) by constructing their own household latrines.
  4. Hygiene Promotion & Behavior Change Campaigns: Conduct targeted hygiene promotion sessions (focusing on handwashing with soap at critical times, safe water handling and storage, and menstrual hygiene management) using community health workers and drama groups.
  5. School WASH Support: Construct gender-sensitive latrine blocks with handwashing stations in 10 primary schools and support the establishment of School Health Clubs to champion hygiene.
